Omar Rodriguez Lopez su Stones Throw

Siamo di fronte ad uno degli artisti più prolifici del nostro tempo. Un uomo per cui la pianificazione discografica è una vaga opinione, un musicista il cui impulso creativo sembra non conoscere freni inibitori. Dai tempi in cui ‘aggrediva’ i palchi di mezzo mondo con una delle formazioni prototipo del nuovo emo-core – gli At The Drive In – alla sua multiforme carriera solista ne è passato davvero molto di tempo. Eppure gli stimoli non sembrano mancare ad Omar, che durante i lunghi – e salutari – congedi dal gruppo madre Mars Volta, sembra esser votato ad ampliare il suo raggio d’azione, costantemente. Dopo gli album per GSL e Willie Anderson, il chitarrista si accasa preso Stones Throw, con quello che possiamo definire un autentico colpo di coda. Data la natura dell’etichetta californiana – specializzata nel più moderno e sorprendente hip hop come nella riproposizione dei cosiddetti rare grooves – la curiosità era davvero tanta.

Old Money conserva tutti i tratti salienti dello stile del chitarrista, offrendo spunto a lunghe divagazioni prog-rock, ad anfetaminiche jam acid-rock e ad interessanti forzature etno-psichedeliche. Tra le righe è possibile scorgere dei link con la più estroversa cultura black dei seventies, tanto che lo stile di Rodriguez è in qualche misura influenzato dal mitico Eddie Hazel dei Funkadelic, come la sua musica può a tratti avvicinarsi ad altri eroi della ‘coscienza nera’ come Black Merda, Black Sugar od i progressivi inglesi Demon Fuzz.

Quindi non vi stupisca più di tanto l’associazione con Stones Throw, se è vero che gli stessi Mars Volta adorano produttori come Madlib e vecchie leggende della musica più off americana come Gary Wilson e Stark Reality, che proprio grazie all’etichetta di Peanut Butter Wolf hanno conosciuto una seconda giovinezza.

Old Money è un disco ovviamente eclettico, poderoso, bilanciato tra un sapere cosmico ed una fascinazione world da non sottovalutare. E’ la crescita artistica dell’artista, completamente a suo agio e capace di puntare ad obiettivi fino a poco tempo fa nemmeno immaginabili.

Un altro passo importante vero il crossover totale, per una delle menti più fertili del nostro tempo.
