About Last Night... Juana Molina Cancels Monday Night Detroit Bar Show

I was thinking about hitting up last night's Juana Molina show at Detroit Bar, and depending on your perspective, I guess it's both good and bad that I was too tired to go out.

Molina never ended up performing last night. Weekly tipster Steve called in to let me know what went down:

"A lot of people there came to see Juana Molina. They hung out for like the whole time, then waited until the set was over and said 'Yeah, we're not going to play.'"

Yelpers also had some comments:

"she was there. someone fucked with her sound setup. she canceled the show."

As Steve tells it, the drama stemmed from Molina's band setting up before Free Moral Agents-who have been performing every Monday as part of the venue's monthly Monday night residencies, until the KCRW-sponsored Molina show was added recently and the usual Monday no cover was changed to $14--had a chance to play. Some words were exchanged between Free Moral Agents bandleader/Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens and Molina, Free Moral Agents ended up performing for about 45 minutes, Molina retreated to the parking lot and then declared, after FMA wrapped up, that she wouldn't be performing. Refunds were given.

One Yelp user shared this colorful version of events:

"Well, shit goes down, Ikey threatens to beat up everyone with her, and they end up canceling the set."

Detroit Bar co-owner Jon Reiser had no official comment.

Free Moral Agents is the brainchild of Isaiah Ikey Owens, Grammy Award-winning keyboardist for The Mars Volta & De Facto.

The Long Beach, CA-based Owens initially started Free Moral Agents as a solo project. It has since expanded into a group effort, a result of Isaiah's decade-long career of collaborations with artists as diverse as El-P, Mastodon, Sublime, Saul Williams, and Z-Trip.

Free Moral Agents released their debut Everybody's Favorite Weapon on GSL Records in late 2004. With freestyle moments layered over vibrant melodies, heavy beats, and jazzy interludes, Everybody's Favorite Weapon was just the beginning of something that was no longer considered just a side-project.

While out on the road with the Mars Volta, Isaiah kept thinking of ways to expand Free Moral Agents. In 2006, FMA went from a solo effort to full six-member group and started improvising new material. With the lineup of Mendee Ichikawa (vocals), Reid Kinnet (Rhodes), Jesse Carzello (guitar), Dennis Owens (bass), Ryan Reiff (drums) and Isaiah jumping from keyboard to keyboard, FMA quickly came up with much new music and was in and out of the studio several times in 2007 and 2008,

Free Moral Agents is now gearing up to release their new album Honey In The Carcass Of The Lion, an EP titled Control This and a 10" vinyl collaboration with legendary Fela Kuti's drummer and Afro Beat co-founder Tony Allen titled North Is Red.

The opening of the Free Moral Agents’ new single “North Is Red” is deceptive, to say the least. The first moments have a decidedly exotic feel—a swoop-and-hit beat with a simple guitar hum. At first it suggests a noise to come—difficult to listen to but rewarding to deconstruct. And I guess that’s half-right, because it was very rewarding—just not as difficult as I’d imagined. Suddenly, horns fly in and a drum kit pulls it all neatly together. This is now something between Jefferson Airplane and traditional calypso. It has an undeniable (nay, unstoppable) swagger that presses it on—the sort of urgency you might hear in a Tarantino film as the bad guys walk into the sunset. Then it jumps into a raging sax-and-drum breakdown that satisfyingly pulls the song to a close. Also included is a remix by Afrobeat drum sultan Tony Allen, who manages to turn a psych-y tune into a more dreamy and surreal affair. The remix works as an amazing cooldown period from the aggressivismo of the sax solo, all the while proving why Tony Allen has gotten as far as he has. FMA has considerable guts to hand their material over to someone who could very conceivably outdo them at every turn. Still, I can’t help but hope they do it again.
